Cave Life of the Virginias
As of May, 2012, there are over 1,138 species that are found only in subterranean habitats of the US, and many more that are associated with caves but also live on the surface.  The Biology Section of the National Speleological Society has published this guide to help cavers identify commonly encountered cave animals.  Because cave animals are often restricted to very small ranges, even to single cave systems, the species that occur in one geographic region are generally vastly different than those encountered in other areas.  For this reason, the cave life guides are targeted to specific karst regions.  The Cave Life of the Virginias guide is the first in the series.
