Caves of Grassy Cove
Grassy Cove is the largest sinkhole in North America. It is 3 miles wide and 6 miles long. All of the precipitation falling into Grassy Cove and draining into Grassy Cove flows into Mill Cave and reappears 7 miles to the south to form the headwaters of the Sequatchie River. Dye traces show that the water sinking underground in Haley Cove and Bat Town Cove another 4 miles to the north also join into the system.
The caves of Grassy Cove have been explored by NSS cavers for over 60 years. Early explorers included Bill Cuddington, Roy Davis, Tom Barr, and Richard Schreiber. The book covers many well-known caves, including the Banshee Hole, the Gouffre, Grassy Cove Saltpeter Cave, and Dorton Knob Smokehole.
This book is lavishly illustrated, with photographs and maps. It begins with the use of these caves by American Indians, continues with saltpeter mining during the War of 1812 and the Civil War, and continues with the current exploration by modern cavers.
