All of those caves east of the Mississippi River from which saltpetre has been procured, are located within the limestone regions of the ridge areas along the Ohio or its tributaries, or within the reaches of the Appalachian Mountains. Records and remnants of the saltpetre mining activity in the Virginia caves extend back to the early Colonial days and through the Revolutionary War.
