Kartchner Caverns
When amateur cavers Gary Tenen and Randy Tufts crawled through a narrow crack leading into a southern Arizona hillside in 1974, they had no idea what awaited them. They had discovered what would become Kartchner Caverns, a stunning limestone cave surveyed at 2.4 miles long. As exciting as this was, it was only the beginning of a 25-year adventure, recounted here, during which Tenen and Tufts struggled to preserve this amazing wonder of the Southwest.
