This is a complete publication of the author's PhD dissertation, completed September 2012 at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, under the supervision of Penny Boston.  It has been reformatted and rearranged.  Chapters II, III, and IV were written as potential journal articles, so the chapters have their own bibliographies.
